Local Spotlight: Haute Chocolate in Cincinnati, OH

Some local businesses become closely tied to the neighborhoods around them. They serve multiple generations, remember longtime customers, and remain familiar even as the surrounding area changes. Haute Chocolate has earned that kind of place in Montgomery after more than four decades of handmade chocolates, baked goods, and creative confections.

For this UpLift Local Spotlight, Max visited Haute Chocolate to meet Matt and learn what has kept the family-founded business going since 1979. The answer is not limited to one recipe or best-selling product. Haute Chocolate has built its reputation by pairing consistency with a willingness to have fun, creating treats that feel rooted in Cincinnati without being predictable.

More Than Four Decades of Handmade Treats

Haute Chocolate began with Matt’s mother, who first made desserts for a Kenwood diner and for people she met through volunteer and charity work. Requests for her treats continued to grow, turning a personal talent into a retail business. Haute Chocolate was established in 1979 and opened its first Montgomery shop in 1988.

The business has occupied several spaces around Montgomery over the years, including the community’s recognizable historic saltbox buildings. Today, Haute Chocolate operates from its shop on Shelly Lane, where its team continues baking and making its confections locally.

Remaining in business for this long requires more than attracting attention once. It means giving customers a reason to return for holidays, gifts, family celebrations, and the occasional treat with no special occasion attached. Haute Chocolate has managed to preserve that familiarity while continuing to introduce new ideas.

A Business That Takes Quality Seriously Without Feeling Too Serious

The name Haute Chocolate is a play on “haute couture,” with “haute” representing a high level of quality. That idea guides the business, but the finished products rarely feel formal or restrained. Haute Chocolate is just as comfortable perfecting a classic chocolate chip cookie as it is turning an iconic Cincinnati food into a dessert.

The Coney Cookie is a good example. Designed to resemble a Cincinnati coney, it uses a caramel cookie base, malt buttercream, spiced chocolate, and vanilla bean decorations. The cookie is immediately recognizable to local customers, but the familiar Cincinnati inspiration is translated into something entirely new.

That combination of careful technique and playfulness can be found throughout the shop. Truffles are made with whipped ganache for a lighter texture, while familiar treats are adjusted through different chocolates, fillings, and flavor combinations. Even a straightforward cookie receives the same attention as one of the shop’s more elaborate creations.

A Buckeye Worth a Trip to Montgomery

Haute Chocolate offers plenty of choices, but its Buckeye remains the confection most closely associated with the business. The shop has been making its version of the Ohio favorite since 1979, long before it received recognition beyond its regular customer base.

Haute Chocolate’s Buckeyes pair creamy peanut butter centers with milk, white, or dark chocolate. Chocolate chips mixed into the filling add another layer of texture and keep the center from feeling overly heavy. The Buckeye has held the top ranking on the Ohio Buckeye Confectionery Trail since the trail began in 2018.

That recognition may bring new visitors through the door, but the Buckeye’s staying power comes from repeat customers. It represents what Haute Chocolate does particularly well: take something familiar, refine the flavor and texture, and make it distinctly its own.

Why Local Longevity Matters

A business that has served the same community for decades develops a different kind of relationship with its customers. The owners cannot separate themselves from the quality of what they sell because they are part of the same neighborhoods, events, and everyday routines as the people visiting their shop.

That visibility creates accountability. Customers expect a locally owned business to be honest, reliable, and willing to stand behind its work. In return, the business gets to form relationships that larger companies often struggle to replicate. Haute Chocolate’s long history in Montgomery suggests that local customers have continued to value both its products and the people making them.

We understand the importance of those relationships at UpLift. As an Ohio-owned and operated cannabis company, we are proud to highlight independent businesses that contribute to the character of Greater Cincinnati. Through our Local Spotlight series, we hope to introduce more people to the businesses and owners doing memorable work throughout our communities.

I had an excellent experience here. The people are knowledgeable and are able to help the novice cannabis user to the more experienced. The process was pretty smooth. The prices were very affordable. They do give the veterans an indigent discount.
